Openers

In the past year or so that I’ve been blogging two things always cause me strife when starting a new entry:

1) How to title it and

2) How to open it.

A good title attracts people, a good opening line keeps them reading – or so my English teacher told me. I struggle to be witty when creating either – so my apologies.

In deference to the fact that I have no inspiration for either, and because I have been reading some of my old favourite books, here are some of the best openers of books that I can think of – have you got any more?

“I am writing this in the kitchen sink” – I Capture the Castle, Dodie Smith

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” – Pride and Prejudice

“Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again” – Rebecca

All good books and good opening lines. I struggle with openers and titles too. Some people just seem to have the knack with short pithy phrases.

'Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents.' Little Women

thought of another:
The Fossil sisters lived in the Cromwell Road. At that end of it which is furthest away from the Brompton Road, and yet sufficiently near it to be taken to look at the dolls' houses in the Victoria and Albert every wet day, and if not too wet expected to "save the penny and walk". maybe I dont think enough about those things? The title just happens I type it then forget it.

Heard you've been busy with Teechers. PT loved it according to his recent post. I do hope you've been enjoying it all.
